About Joseph Pilates

Joseph H. Pilates (1881-1967) was a German-born man of Greek descent who came to New York in the ’30s and developed his method working initially with dancers, helping and influencing famous artists like Martha Graham. Pilates studied yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts, and ancient fitness forms and had a background in gymnastics, diving, and boxing.

His interest in physical fitness stemmed from a determination to strengthen his own body and improve his health after a sickly childhood. Thus he devised a set of exercises that worked mind and muscles in harmony.

About the Method Pilates

Pilates is a complete method of exercise, body-conditioning, and rehabilitation practiced on specialized equipment or on the mat. It places great emphasis on strengthening the core muscles of the body, or “powerhouse”. The aim is to strengthen the center, lengthen the spine, increase body awareness, and build muscle tone and flexibility. A strong center helps alleviate back pain, prevent injury, and bring the body into balance and a better posture. However, the Pilates method is not just abdominal work but a complete form of exercise that strengthens and tones every muscle of the body.

Today, in the 21st century, thousands of people around the world of all ages and fitness levels practice Pilates with great benefits. As Joseph Pilates himself predicted, “This is the method of the new millennium.”

Famous Pilates Quotes:

The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.

In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, and in thirty you will have a brand new sense of your body.

When all your muscles are properly developed, you will, as a matter of course, perform your work with minimum effort and maximum pleasure.

Be certain that you have your entire body under complete mental control.

Contrology (his definition of Pilates) develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.

Patience and Persistence are vital qualities in the ultimate successful accomplishment of any worthwhile endeavor.

With body, mind, and spirit functioning perfectly as a coordinated whole, what else could reasonably be expected other than an active, alert, disciplined person?

PILATES STARTER

The basic principles of fitness are taught from the beginning. Motion combined with breathing, concentration, awareness, balance, control, core, efficiency, flow, precision, harmony.

PILATES MAT

The classic repertoire of exercises includes strengthening the core, stabilizing the pelvis and spine, and stimulating the buttocks, feet and hands. Dynamic level.

PILATES WITH PROPS

Exercises with props emphasize balance and stabilization while exerting the body and tightening the whole body. Classes are especially popular because they offer an extra challenge but also fun.
